What should we do with the Elgin Marbles?

Watch this briefing show

In this section you will be investigating the Elgin marbles, making a presentation based on your research and possible producing a short questionnaire.

Task 1 - some background reading

Use the internet to answer these questions:

  1. Where is the Parthenon, when was it built  and what was it first used for?
  2. What are the Elgin marbles?
  3. When did they come to England?
  4. Where are they kept?

Task 2 - getting information

You now need to gather information about the Elgin marbles. What you need to find is information about whether they should be returned to Greece (if you didn't find out about this then read go to this web page) or kept where they are now.

What you need to do is find some web pages with information on it that is useful and keep a record of the web site.

To do this, you can copy the URL from the address bar into a word document that is set up called Elgin web sites

To copy and paste a URL, do the following:

1. In Internet Explorer, click on the

2. Right click on the writing and select copy

3. In the template right click in the place you need the URL and select paste.

Task 4 - getting information (extension)

Carry out a quick 'opinion poll' of people in your class - are they 'for' or 'against' returning the marbles. You could also ask others - your family, other classes, teachers..................? Try to turn your results into a chart to use below.

Task 5 - using the information

Put together a poster or presentation about the Elgin marbles including

  • what they are
  • how they got where they are
  • the different views about what to do with them
  • some images
  • a chart of your opinion poll (if you did one)
  • Try to include information from RELIABLE sources only - these might be PRIMARY information sources or SECONDARY sources from reliable organisations or  newspapers

Your presentation should be aimed at students in a year 8  assembly.
